Polar Code: seafarers need to be ready to sail in the ice conditions

According to the amendments to the STCW Convention, navigators must take appropriate courses in swimming in polar waters. This regulation became mandatory from July 1, 2018, when the amendments came into force.

The Polar Code says that vessels navigating in high latitudes must be staffed by suitably qualified personnel. To do this, captains, senior assistants and persons from among the commanders who maintain a navigational watch must be trained in accordance with the requirements of the STCW Convention.

Marine Training Center Unitrain conducts appropriate training in two versions: basic and advanced. Courses are approved by the Maritime Administration and are conducted in accordance with IMO model courses. All navigators must go through the baseline, and as for the rest of the crew – privates and those working in the engine room, the STCW Convention does not impose any additional requirements on them.
